hi, having kept koi for a few years and going to shows maybe it would be a good idea if the forum could have a section similar that discusses what makes a specimen piranha (size, large jaw, large tail fin, etc.)it could have a sub section in the pictures section for a fish of the month. it may also give all the experienced p keepers something to get their teeth into deciding what makes a show? fish as well as giving good advice to newbies like myself ??????????????
Dizzy Dawg
We already have photo of the month contests....
And if you have any show worthy P's feel free to post them anytime. Not sure if a seperate forum set aside for these would be used very much...

that is just my opinion though. anyone else have any thoughts?
mick m
yeah, your probably right dizzy, i was just thinking along the lines of members giving a photo marks out of ten (6.5 or 8.5)then discusing were a fish looses and gains points.
i think all p s are great! but mine all have different body parts i like (large jaw or a mean look, large tail fin) would be nice to have one with all these together!
what features would make a "show" piranha??????
Scott
I like it, kinda like Crufts for p's lol....could be fun.

i like the idea dont get me wrong but as with most things the person with the most money wins alot of the time, correct me if i am wrong though..........................

i think your wrong dez. it all comes down to who was lucky and bought the nicest fish. i dont think there are standards for piranha so how could you judge them anyway? i dont get it.
mick m
i was thinking along the lines of pfuk setting the standards and the comunity judging

the bought bit i have highlighted says it all

so if we were judging a rhom, a specimen species of rhomis obviously over around the 8-9" mark, a fish of that size is gonna cost well over the £100 pound mark so money does come into it at some level,

with other fish ie reds then this wont be the case so much as peope can grow then alot quicker, and making them a specimen comes with luck as they grow larger,

how about a manueli contest, this species is just very very highly priced, singling out alot of people who cant afford a specimen like this,

DONT GET ME WRONG THIS IS GREAT IDEA FOR THE PEOPLE WHO OWN THESE FISH BUT I AM JUST GIVING PROS AND CONS, I MYSELF WOULD LOVE TO SEE PEOPLES SPECIMENS AND JUDGE WHICH ONES ARE THE BEST, SO THIS IS A GREAT IDEA.................
Ash
Maybe just get a list of Piranha species and get pictures of the best looking ones and whack them in a pinned topic for reference for new/and or people who are interested in new species?

every species that anyone was willing to submit any photo's for and that was only 11 species as I had to dig an old one of mine out to finish off the calendar.

We also have the gallery which is much under used resourse so could be used for this purpose. I'm sure Paul would encourage the use of this facility.

Yeah I suppose, very true!

yes but an 8-9" rhom with a slight case of fin rot, or a bit of heater burn will cost the same as one without.

think your missing my point................

I understand what you are getting at. A fish with heater burn, possibly fin nips or fight damage would have originally cost the same as a fish without. A fish that has never had any of this so has no marks/scars on it hence 'could' have a outstanding looking colour + shape so this could be a so called 'show' fish (a fish that looks outstanding in perfect condition). For example, a Pygo kept on its own could quite possibly look better than 1 that has been kept with 6 others due 2 battle scars etc. That fish would have still cost the same originally.

Just my thoughts.Have a nice day. ninja_hide_h4h.gif

I missed this thread before but I quite like the suggestion put forward.

What is basically being suggested is the definition of a set of standards for piranha species. This is in much the same vein as many fish clubs or associations of fish clubs have a set of standards and run their own shows where fish are judged according to those standards.

The standards would comprise of such things as fish length, intact finnage, eye colouration, defined markings etc etc. The standard would be set for each species and points are then awarded in each category to give an overall score.

Would take a bit of work to set up the standards and then work out what we do with them but no reason that we, as the foremost group of P keepers in the UK couldn't define them.

sounds good to me buddy, if needed ill lend a helping hand
