Hello all, this is the story i was in a pet shop in Leiden today & saw this Piranha in a tank with couple of reds. So i asked the guy what type of piranha it is, he said he had no idea. Well it was a bit worse for wear so i offer him 10 euro for it & he took it. I have him in a 160l tank now. But what Piranha it is i have no clue. So i hope you guy's can help. laugh.gif

Its a bit worse for wear and the pictures are not that good, but the only one I know that has bars is Pygopristis denticuata, common name 5 cusped piranha. Eats seeds, though I could be wrong.
Steve.
Pristobrycon Striolatus

What colour eyes does it have, and how big is he...........?

Im tempted from doing some digging to say it is a Serrasalmus Gouldingi. Gouldingi are described as having a clear edge to their tailfin, and amber/clear eyes.

It does look to have a clear tail end, but it's not in good shape. Eyes are black with a amber ring, also the eyes are bigger than a red belly.

Qualify that for me Lucien if you would.

the info I have suggests striolatus is speckled, not striped.... but the mouth does look like Pristobrycon. uhm.gif

Just checked out some info on the net on Serrasalmus Gouldingi, & looking at some pic's it looks alot like whats sitting in my tank. Because of the stripes on it & it's tail. Maybe Dan's right

FrankP, one of the Dutch members lives in Leiden. A couple of months ago he offered one of his P.striolatus specimen on a Dutch site. He sold it so he could try breeding the remaining couple.
Nobody was interested though, but it looks like exactly the same fish.
Would not surprise me, if it turns out to be the same specimen.

Reason I believe I recognise it, is that I spend some weeks in doubt whether to pick it up or not.

The bars on the body suggest denticulata, striolatus doesn't have them and striolatus also has more of a cleft head. Striolatus also has a peak to its back whereas denticlata is more egg shaped, as in the pictures. There's one way to find out, have a look at its teeth, denticulata has 5 cusp's.

Confused me from the beginning, but I've seen more stroilatus specimen with a striped pattern under a certain light.
Look at this one :

Indeed only one way to find out...
Check the teeth, if they are penticuspid it's a denticulata smile.gif

Ok maybe it could be the same fish. Have you still got the link where this fish was offered?

Providing, of course, it was correctly labelled as a striolatus in the first place before you got it ninja_hide_h4h.gif

No longer available, they remove links that are old or sold.
But even though it took me forever (at least I learned to use the "search" option) I found some pics of the fish :
