Full Version: What To Feed A Very Small Red Belly?

Hello there, i've just got a red belly that is half an inch long at the most and i am now worried about food. I thought bloodworm would be a good grow food but to be honest i think the little guy will struggle to eat a single worm! Maybe these fish are too small to be sold at the size they are but i figured if i can give one a good home then why not. New to forums aswell so struggling to use this site but would really appreciate any advise. cheers

thanks for the quick response, just tried him on a frozen bloodworm, went down easy even though it was about the same length as the little beast! I've been after a piranha for a while but because i live in jersey we don't have many lfs. In fact we only have 3. If i find some more do you think i could add them if the size isn't too different?

if you have a big enough tank and filter system then why not but try to get them around the same size mate

Hello mate and welcome to the best Piranha Forum in the UK for accurate and friendly advice...!

A P that size will eat daphnia, bloodworm, small bits of earthworm... you name it. Red bellies are shoaling fish, if you can, it would be best to give him some friends of a similar size but its not absolutely critical.

Let us know what your set up is, i.e tank size, filter and substrate etc, and if we can we will help wherever possible.

Glad to see a new member, any questions, ask away, no such thing as a silly question here.

All the best.

in my experience reds tend to be more canabilistic at smaller sizes to be a little bit more careful with how many you add to the tank, depending on how big the tank is. Good luck and Im sure you wont have much trouble, just keep them fed well

Thanks for the info, at the moment i've got him in a small tank he's about the size of a guppy! Once he grows a bit i have plans to put him in my 300 litre rio which has the standard filter box plus an external 405. Many years ago (maybe 10) i tried to keep a shoal of 6 rb's but ended up with one big fella! Had memories of that and so went for just the one, thinking i should've got more now. sad.gif
