Full Version: Ideas For A 20g
Piranha forum > Tropical fish > Bottom dwellers & catfish

I'm glad I found this section otherwise I would have ended up joining another forum to add to my long list! ohmy.gif

Anyway my Piranha tank doesn't look like it's gonna happen due to lack of space (see other thread) so now i'm set on something smaller. I was thinking maybe a 20/30g nano as they look pretty good. As for fish I wanted to have a red tail shark and a bunch of small catfish. My question to you all is recommend me some nice catfish and/or some similar fish good.gif

Red tail shark would need 30g minimum when adult, gets to about 6"

Do you know what Exodon Paradoxus are Jonny?
rac3r
They look pretty cool, sort of like angry Tetras laugh.gif

I'm guessing only 1 will fit?

Keep the ideas coming!

Their bucktooth tetra mate, kind of like mini piranhas and have similar feeding frenzy tendancies. A large shoal of them are quite impressive and very fun to watch at feeding time.

That's what I thought when I saw this http://www.fishdeals.com/characins/tetra/bucktooth_tetra/ laugh.gif

Will a shoal fit in my size tank?
~Curly~
Depends on the footprint of the tank.
rac3r
So does the tank need to be long rather than square (which is what I was looking at)?
rac3r
Right now I've yet to confirm if I can have this size tank but going by my dads sump size which is 36 x 13 x 13 how would that be for the tetras? (Hold on, won't a Sanchezi fit in there?)
rac3r
Scratch the last post, that tank size is too big sad.gif
~Curly~
What about axolotyl's? Can be a bit carnivourous. I bought another to keep my one company but it was a bit smaller than the orginal. Came down one morning to find it sticking out of the bigger ones mouth ohmy.gif
May get some more for a little project that may come up.

That is one weird fish ohmy.gif

Looking into the tetra's a little it seems 9/10 should be ok in a 30g with the help of an external filter.

For those interested they actually do have teeth:

actually, they will likely only grow to be 3". at its peak, my shoal was well over 300 strong, and not a single one even close to a true 4".
i have also corresponded with many experts who have worked with them both captive and in the wild, and nobody has seen this alleged 6" exodon. it is the general agreement that the average max size of your E.Paradoxus will be 3.8"

exodons should be kept in a minimum shoal of 10, and while this may seem like a little much for a 20g, it is absolutely doable. as long as you maintain WP, and have good filtration, you will have nothing to worry about. in fact, even with 10 in a 20g, the tank will look pretty empty. i would suggest filling the empty space wit live plants.

if you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a PM
