Hello. Just got a pacu and some tinfoil barbs about a month ago. Wanted to start a thread somewhere to show the progress and keep up over the next few months. I know there's not much here in the way of pacu threads, you can thank google for being one of the top results for "red belly pacu forum" today. Anyway, on with the thread. Picked up a red bellied pacu, two tinfoil barbs, and a pleco. Only have them in a 30 right now as they still seem to get along fine. That and I don't want to encourage the growth on any of these at the moment.

Going to throw up a vid too, pacu munching on algae wafers....he loves em, hillarious when the tinfoil robs him at the end. Other interesting point, if you listen close enough, when he's biting on the tabs...you can hear it. Impressive bite.

I don't understand why we dont have more Pacu threads either ohmy.gif

nobody is against your fish mate... get some pics up
Chris.
An insightfull observation Digicorr unfortunately for Pacus they wont find much love here,
Ash
Yup, they aren't IMO the greatest fish. Eat shiloads, grow ridiculously fast, and after about 8-10" they start looking horrible!

In my opinion of course!

Do you realise what happens to these fish? To "euthanise him" would be doing it a favour. They should never be taken out of the wild. They grow to over 5 feet in length very fast indeed. What sort of a life will it have in a 30 gallon tank. Think before hurling insults.

agree with whats been said but lets try and keep this civil chaps.... he is a new member after all

odd that you'd come to a piranha forum to show off your pacu, but welcome2.gif to the forum anyway smile.gif
Ash
It's a tad harsh to say to kill his own fish, its his personal choice to have a Pacu, he's got to deal with it.

Come on fellers, this guy needs educating. He has also got 2 tinfoil barbs and a plec in his 30 gal tank. Friend of mine had 5 tinfoils in a 400 gal tank and they were 15/18 inches each. The plec also grows quite large as you all know.

Digicorr, get yourself a 200 gal tank with the appropriate filtration, sit back and enjoy your fish. I for one would then be interested in watching their progress.
Alex
i cant disagree, 30gallon is a joke for those fish.... lets just hope he has plans for a bigger tank
DIGICORR
Is anyone even reading my posts? They are in this tank for a few weeks. The pacu is roughly 6 inches long, pleco 5, tinfoils 4-3. Plenty of room for a few weeks. Don't really feel like throwing them in a tank before it ready and killing my fish.

On a side note. I've thought to myself if there could be a market in this area for pacu. Due to the crazy growth rate it would be very easy to keep very large pacu on hand for some GIANT fillets.

Not trying to start a war with this one. I may be new, and have fish that will grow to large sizes but I HAVE done my research. I have NEVER seen a report of one of these things getting larger than roughly 35 inches. that's a far cry from the 7' that was quoted in a previous post.

I created the thread just as a way to keep track of my fish online. Give people a place to go look at them. I have previously stated you can thank google for being one of the top results.

Where does it say in this original post that the 30 gallon was temporary? And no one has said anywhere, that these fish grow to 7 feet! But they have been known to grow to five feet, and size of tank does not slow them down. I've kept pacu, I know how they grow. They belong in a pond not a small tank. Mine went to a pond.

Assumed right now....as in atm would be enough to lead you to the conclusion that it was temporary, and the 7 was a typo my apologizes. At any rate, 5' is still a tall tale. 35" full grown. Would like to see a red belly bigger than that.

Gotta say here guys, I didn't expect this much sh** to be given about the fact I have a fish you don't personally find "attractive" or like it's growth rate or even it's feeding habits. I was under the assumption that I could come in here and create a valid thread about a pacu. I know this is a predominately "pirahna" forum, and by all rights I should have expected this from a crowd with that background.

Was just looking to make a decent thread and catch the occasional nice fish or good upgrade.

Nice color on yours Den...

with "that background" to me seemed as though you was reffering to people with piranhas in a negative way. We dont all not like pacu here as some of us have said so dont tarnish us all with the same brush good.gif

Its not a matter of disliking pacu, its all about the way they are kept. I bought mine by mistake thinking they were young nattereri, but I looked after them in a 150 gallon until i could find a better home for them, which I did. They now live in a 2000 gallon indoor pond. You started this thread off giving everyone the impression that you thought it was alright to keep pacu in a 30 gallon tank, thats why you are getting bad feedback. The other thing, is that pacu are classed, in the piranha fraternity, as 'imposters' thats another reason for the feedback.
Dont take this feedback too seriously though, some people like one car and class all others as rubbish. I hope you get a bigger aquarium for your fish and enjoy watching it grow, because grow it will biggrin.gif

Hi.

Guys: I veŽbeen reading all this thread and it is my own point of view you are being too rude at new members. unsure.gif

I dont think Digicorr deserved the way some of you treated him. He mentioned he wanted to set a thead for Pacu I think it is quite fair.

Digicorr I saw your vid. Your fish is nice in fact my firts "piranhas" were some pacu (Which at that time I thought nattereri) I remember them with glad nevertheless I got rid of them because of their size as you have been told.

Anyway, if you read this and you decide to stay with us despite what happened It would be very nice to read more about your expirience with your fish.

Cheers.

Nice fish DIGICORR,, i tink the reason some members dont like Pacu is cos they have had them inadvertantley thinking they piranha ,, LOL and now they hate em
