Thought i'd ask what dechlorinator everyone is using
as there's so many and its expensive stuff.
Just hope your not using them small bottles of king british etc
there is a very cheap option as to buying the "brand names"
Jonny
I use aquasafe, its not let me down and I dont trust my water here laugh.gif

Dechlorinator can be my next word of the week ohmy.gif
Chris.
Not really looked into it that much, been using the Interpet Freshstart, pond version, £13 retail at 1ltr treats 2000gal, 1 cap is 25ml which treats 50gal, removes chlorine +heavy metals, its a bit of a con to buy the aquarium bottle coz it same price but 500 ml, i think theres a 2ltr which`ll probably save you more money

....me neither smack.gif now and again.... depenent on water changes, but I have never used warm water, I cant...so hence more frequent smaller water changes.

yep i used to have shed loads of tanks and got though it pretty quick but i aint know so i just sits under the sink doing jack...
Steve.
I use Aqua-safe but buy it bulk size 2ltr bottles.Matt always orders it in for us so cant remember how much it is.I think its about £40 or something like that.Interesting to read what different types people use.We all live in different parts of the country so i guess its whats best for that area.
~Curly~
Pondsafe is more concentrated then aquasafe and is the same stuff. Doesn't remove chloramine though and according to a mate who does work for Anglian Water, they are using that more to treat the water than chlorine.
I use Amquel+ which I put in 1ml/ltr a 473ml (16floz.) bottle costs me £14. Supposed to reduce nitrate as well!
lucas
I knew a few of you would know about pond dechlor as i used to say
to the shops etc have you got pond dechlor and they d say "whats it for!"
id say "for a trop tank" theyd say "oh you dont want to
use that its not good enough for tanks"?!?! Id say "lying c*nt"
most people dont think they can use it as its for ponds but its all the same

Chris.
Yeah , i get "how big is your pond?" and i say i havent got one. Some of them just remove chlorine, i think with rhoms you want to remove anything you can, something makes them get hith so i want the water free of anything they might be sensitive to

not with you once again chris "how big is your pond?" ?!?!?!?!
This dechlor is what i've used for 2 years and removes chloramine aswell as metal ions
and adds Vitamin B1 plus organic colloids to protect against infections.
The p's have been spawning throughout it's use!!
Chris.
What i meant was when i ask for the pond declor the shop guy says "how big is you pond" and i say " i havent got one"
Nevermind its not that funny

Who makes that declor you posted Lucas? Do you buy online? Have you got a link?

Sorry mate ive got you now (i think) you mean they try and sell you the biggest least concentrated bottle they have?

What i mean is the shops will try and keep selling you the little bottles and blag you that you cant use it for tropical tanks and they will shy away from telling the average aquarist to use
pond dechlor as they want you coming back every week for more!
just buisness i suppose but if you dont use your bonce then you get ripped
its the same with bloodworm, them little 10 cube in a pack for £2.25
what they dont give you is the 1kg slabs what the wholesalers use to feed their fish
some will sell you it for £15 but can get it for £10!!
Alex
i stopped using it a couple of years ago

i read something online basically saying it wasn't really needed,
and there were some tests done to determine if there were any ill effects to the filter or general water quality if you didnt use it
(there was even a theory that the bacteria in the filter actually feeds off the chlorine/chloramine)

i know of alot of people that dont use it, and some of them keep rays, arrowana, discus, bass and other more expensive/ supposedly sensitive fish
and even breeders dont see any ill effects on there breeding stock and everything spawns as normal with no problems at all.
......ive even read that Asian arrowana breeders that do 100%+ water changes A DAY dont use the stuff with no problems with water params

all my fish are perfectly healthy and growing nicely so ive got no reason to start using it again
lucas
^
I've heard this aswell but i just wouldn't trust not using it
anymore but maybe worth doing a few experiments on tanks after wter changes
with and without dechlor
to see if anything is affected like the nitrite cycle etc

Alex
at the end of the day its down to whatever you feel comfortable with,
i think most people use it just to be on the safe side and cos they always have,
..... i used to think the same, but realised nothing changed when i stopped using it
lucas
^
Thats what it is, people do what they are told by
the so called experts in the shops (not saying alot of them dont know anything but the majority
know not alot more than the average bloke!)
Alex
totally mate, but you cant blame the shop really, there just trying to sell a product to make money
its down to the individual to do there own research and find out the products that they need and dont need
... and more importantly which products offer the best value for money

like you say, you see people buying them little 50cl bottles of dechlorinator cos thats the one they had in the shop, and its a rip off
but why would the shop owner tell them to buy the bigger or better bottle, when he knows they'll be back in a week to buy more!!
..... a little research from that person would tell them there are better products to buy that would actually save them money in the long run.

thats why i love forums like this.... not only do you learn something but they can actually save you money
lucas
^
Thats exactly the ticket (using your head a little can get you a long way at times)
not blaming the shop it, it buisness at the end of the day and if it wasn't for them we'd be f*kd
And this forum is the one for getting the info! rolleyes.gif

There's different sized bottles from 50ml to 20L. I bought a 100ml bottle for £4.74 inc shipping and it'll treat 1000 US gallons. (1 UK gallon = 4.54609 litres, 1 US gallon = 3.78541178 litres) I know of lots of people that use plain tap water but for the sake of a fiver once a year or so I'd rather play it safe. I read an article on dechlorinators and some do more than others, Seachem Prime was rated very highly.

You can get various sizes..I got a 500ml off ebay for 6 quid and I only use 20ml a week so does last a while.

It made me laugh Chris ! lmao.gif good.gif

I don't use any, haven't done for about 3 years.
Chris.
I read an article in one of the fishkeeping mags, it was basically experts / breeders with 40 years fishkeeping experience etc giving tips , one guy who`d bred just about everything said the only additive/ chemical he ever used was salt , half the time he doesnt use filters but connects the tank up to a heavily planted tank to remove ammonia etc

Lucas who makes that declor you`re using?

Marios never used it and hes raised piraya , bred angels wholesale etc and reds by the thousands in black plastic water tanks

I use it but maybe its just a placebo
chris1971
Used it on my first tank set up 2 more tanks since then and didn,t use any havn,t had any problems, although like one of you mentioned i suppose its dependent on were you live and the quality of the water in your area.

here you go chris i've foundd another dechlor
http://www.kockneykoi.co.uk/productpages/m...chlorinator.htm
it claims to treat 150 gallons per 10 ml and you can get 1litre bottles and 2.5l
but when i read the back of the 1litre bottle in the shop it said the bottle will treat
something like 3750 gallons twice, but dont know how that works out
as a litre should treat 15000 gals!!
my dechlor does 100 gal per 10ml ill see if they have a website
lucas
